Today’s theme is ‘robot’. I pondered all kinds of different robots from old films and TV series and then realised that I had seen robots on TV very recently – in Channel 4’s excellent eight-part series, Humans. Humans is set in the current day, but with a difference. There are synthetic humans or ‘synths’ in almost every aspect of daily life, from helping around the house to picking fruit to working in a call centre.
As part of the marketing and advertising for the series, a fake company was created, Persona Synthetics, to tie in with this creepily realistic advert that had many people wondering if synths were actually a thing:
I sort of identify with the synths – I’ve been known to use their catch-all phrase: “I’m sorry, I don’t understand the question”. People have often compared me to Data from Star Trek! So with that in mind I decided to show my solidarity by making a vector (to be laser cut at some point in the future) of the symbol used in the series for synths….
